If you had to guess, how much money do you think you have saved this year using coupons, getting freebies, and deals? Really think about it for a second. Even if you only started a few weeks ago, think how much money you saved during Christmas.
My goal for every single person who comes to this website is to save as much money as they can! So, I am going to help hold you accountable. Set a savings goal for yourself for 2010. You may want to be really ambitious or keep it on the lower side. **You can always adjust your goal later if you think you were too timid!
On average, I save about $400 a month. And that's without even trying. So, let's all really push ourselves to save some money and still buy the things we want to buy!
Goals always work a little better if you put them in writing. So here is how it works:
- Think about how much money you have saved since you have started using deals, coupons, and getting freebies. Average out a monthly number in your head. Then, decide on what would be a worthy savings goal for you to set for the entire year of 2010.
- Comment on this post and let us all know how much money you want to save in 2010! This is a total savings on grocery bills, retail stores, items you get for free, any Swagbucks you redeem for Gift Cards... pretty much anything that you save money on.
- Keep every single receipt! Either put it in a receipt drawer or a big Envelope. When you get home from the store, just write down (or create a word/excel file) how much you saved. There are a number of ways to do this. But just subtract the retail price from any coupons, in-store discounts, or gift cards you get back. That is the amount you saved! (Example: The Snuggle Laundry Soap I bought yesterday was normally $8.99. It was on store markdown to $4.48. Plus I had a $2.00 off coupon. I only paid $2.48 for it. So, my total savings was $6.51.)
I know for some of you, this is asking a lot! Hopefully, it isn't too challenging! But, create a reward. If you decide that you are going to save $2,000 this next year, what will you do with the $2,000 you would have spent?? Do you want to go on a huge vacation with your family? Do you want to get out of debt? Do you want to buy a new 50" LCD TV? What is it for you??
I will go first!
My goal is to save over $5,000 dollars in 2010. I have decided to set two rewards for myself. If I am on track by May, and have saved about $2,500, then I want to go on a Sandals Vacation with my husband! Everything is inclusive. 5-Star Restaurants, Scuba Diving, Snorkeling.... The cost will be about $2,500 for an entire week. It is already a great price and I'm sure I can even find a discount on it.
If I reach my goal by December 31st, I would like to go to Hawaii for my first time ever in the beginning of January 2011!
Ok, there you have it! You definitely don't have to be as ambitious as I am being. But, I figure if you don't shoot for something harder than you think you can accomplish, you will never know if you could!
Your turn! Leave a comment letting us know what your savings goal is and what you want your reward to be! **Remember it can be as low or as high as you want to go!

Thanks for the comment on my blog. I think this is a great idea. I too would like to save more money in 2010. I would like to be able to give more back. I would purchase a better camera and work harder on my photography so I feel more confident to donate my services to those less fortunate. Thanks for your wonderful blog to help me and my family meet our goals. Happy new year to you and your family.
I would love to save $1,000.00 by May 01, 2010 for our anniversary. I think that is a wonderful idea that you have. Thank you for sharing the deals.
I am new to couponing & have signed up for some of the freebies & can't wait to use the deals you find. It is still a little confusing though :-) my goal is to save $5,000 this year as well. I want to go to an all inclusive resort in cabo with my husband & take a family Disney cruise with the money :-) thank you for this challenge. I'm excited to see how we all do. When i'm at $2,500 in May I will book our anniversary getaway for our 4 year in august :-)
My goal is at least $3000.00 this year. I'm counting on you to get me there!!
My husband and I are having our 3 year anniversary in March, and I would love to have at least $600 by then so we can put that money towards our anniversary Disneyland trip!!
My goal is $3,000 this year. We have been wanting to take our family to Disneyland. I love this challenge! My question is where are you going to stash your savings? Under the mattress?, the bank? I love to save money but it seems the savings always ends up going somewhere else. What works for you and your family to keep that savings??
Thank you for this challenge!
What a great idea! I like goals where I can concretely see my progress. My goal is to save $2000 this year, but my more main goal is to cut back on things I don't need--clothing, extra gifts, eating out a lot, etc.
Which reminds me, Melea: have you used mypoints.com? I looked for a post on here but didn't receive a match. It is a great website, you can accrue points for buying things online that you were going to anyway(as long as you click through from their website first), clicking on email links, taking surveys, reviewing websites, etc. It's great and it's not a scam I promise! I've been a member for a year and a half and already cashed more then $125 in gift cards with enough for almost $50 more in my account. If anybody wants to join, I get referral points and you get extra points for being referred, so leave me your email. You've got nothing to lose!
Phillips Family-
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you!
My husband and I have different opinions. I am an "out of site, out of mind" type of person. So I either like to take the cash out and stash it somewhere... or open a new account that cannot be linked to your current one. Then, you won't be tempted to transfer money over online.
My husband is in the mortgage business. Proving your assets are really important if you want to get a mortgage loan. So, he always likes to keep money in the bank.
Hope that helps!
Melea
